Pure Pop Perfection from Albuquerque, NM!

One wonders where singer-songwriter Rob Martinez has been hiding his melodic gifts all these years. After stints in various L.A. bands in the '80s and '90s, Martinez returned to his native Albuquerque and became assistant state historian of New Mexico.

Martinez' respect for history extends to music. New Love Environment understands what makes a great old school melodic pop album. First of all, it's short – 10 songs clocking in at 33 minutes. Second, each track was crafted by Martinez and producer/multi-instrumentalist Adam Marsland as its own single – each cut meticulously arranged yet still spontaneous.

Third, Martinez and Marsland get the sonics right. As Martinez shifts gears through sprightly midtempo numbers, wistful ballads and cheerful, sly rockers, Marsland compliments the songs with the requisite harmonies, 12-string guitars and vintage keyboards required for each individual soundscape.

But most of all, Martinez' songwriting brings thoughtfulness and humanity to the genre. While Martinez' clear voice and melodic sense are tailor-made for pop, it's his thoughtful and insightful lyrics and dogged optimism that mark him as an inheritor to McCartney – not just a way with a melody, but an eye for the beauty of the ordinary. New Love Environment is like a visit from an old friend that leaves you feeling just a little inspired. When the final strains of the Raspberries/Left Banke-esque ballad "Mrs. Adrienne" fade away, you'll be reaching for the repeat button.
