about

After the October 2017 release of Rob Martinez’ second CD
Today My Mind…Tomorrow the World sealed his reputation as a
first-rate melodic pop singer/songwriter, it seemed likely that
would be his final statement.

Following its release Martinez ended his long-standing presence
in acoustic venues in Albuquerque to ascend to the prestigious
position of New Mexico State Historian. Meanwhile, producer
Adam Marsland (Standells/Cockeyed Ghost), who played
nearly every instrument on the first two albums based on ideas
from Martinez’ demos, was dismantling his studio and preparing
to move to Asia, his own future uncertain.

However, at the very last moment Martinez sent a new round of
songs for Marsland to evaluate. In the last few days before
closing his studio, Marsland frantically laid down track after track
of ideas for each song, saved them to a hard drive, and “then
flew away.”

Over the next two years, Marsland worked on the tracks and
added to them in far flung locations in southeast Asia. On a rare
trip back to the U.S., Martinez added vocals and guitar. Finally, in
2020, Maybe Miss America is ready for release.

While still in the melodic pop vein of Martinez’ first few albums,
Maybe Miss America adds lush soundscapes, multiple layered
vocals, and a Lindsey Buckingham-inspired quirkiness on
tracks like “Free.” The lush reverb and wide spaces add a touch
of forlornness to songs like “Seems Like Only Yesterday.”

There’s also a retro ‘80s vibe to the propulsive, dark sounding “If
Love Could Lie” and the grand, searching themes of “Sacrifice,”
while the broad harmonies of “Summer of Love” and “Maybe
Miss America” conjure up a soundscape as vast as the country
itself. After two years of waiting, Maybe Miss America is a
welcome reminder that artist and producer are not done creating
just yet.
